Our Future…
…depends on addressing the current needs and issues of  science and   mathematics education.
  • The broader community needs to be energized to deal with the tremendous issues in science and mathematics education.
  • Teachers cannot solve the problem alone, but must be supported by parents, community members, and those who already have a vested interest.
  • Collaboration of partners in the Math, Science, and Kids! effort will improve the teaching and learning of science and mathematics in the region.

Area of Excellence and Research Agenda

The learning of math and science proceeds best when students are able to understand its importance in their lives and see the many direct relationships with the physical world. This principle guides the work of the SW Center and the STEMM partners, acting as a theme for Center efforts.

Approaches

The underlying focus and work of the SW Center is the development of partnership networks to increase public awareness and strengthen resources and training opportunities for each other, students, and teachers. This work proceeds through…

Public Awareness – to courage broad community support for STEMM education

Professional Development – for pre-service and in-service teachers, aligning with state goals

Resourcing – through collaboration with pK-12 schools and other partners to support STEMM education and careers
